pusan for spring break

Last Saturday Julia and I got up at 08:00 am to leave for Pusan after celebrating Shu's birthday the night before. As most of you know I decided to do my exchange semester here in South Korea because I fell in love with Seoul when I was invited to Della's wedding. Della was my host sister during my year in England, which is already 10 years ago - I do feel old when writing this. As she has moved to Pusan soon after her wedding, it was time for a visit to this amazing city. Our midterm exam break at university was just the perfect occasion.

Saturday
Pusan is the second biggest city of South Korea. We've stayed there from Saturday - Wednesday. Unfortunately we didn't catch the best weather. When we arrived in Pusan at 5 pm we took a bus to our hostel which was located in the famous Haeundae area. The bus was packed with people so we had to stand for the whole one hour ride. It was more than welcomed that an old Korean man, who was sitting, took my heavy hand bag and put it on his knees. At first it felt a little awkward but soon we've noticed that this is how the Koreans do it. At this point I should mention that the people in Pusan were even more very friendly than the Seoul people. They all tried to make an effort to speak some English words, they smile a lot and seem a little happier than the Seoul population. After our arrival at the hostel and a quick shower we went out to meet my dear Della, who is badly missed in Seoul. We ate a super delicious seafood soup and had some beers at a bar.

Sunday
Due to heavy rain on Sunday and Monday we spent a lot of our time inside. Thanks god Pusan is the location of the largest department store in the world, Shinsaegae departement store. I'm still not sure it is the biggest in the world, at least they say so. This is where we spent most of our Sunday. We didn't shop anything really, we just looked around and were amazed by the size of this whole thing.  On Sunday evening Della has invited us for dinner at her appartment. She cooked Jeon for us, my favourite food of hers, that she already made many times in England for me. It's a Korean style pancake with meat and vegetables. I truly felt blessed to spend some time with her perfect little family.

Monday
On Monday we still had to fight with the bad weather so we started our day in some underground shopping centre, which was nice to finally look into all the Korean cosmetic and clothing stores. The variety is mind blowing, sometimes I'm totally lost in this paradise! After that we went to eat the famous Pusan pork and rice soup for lunch. Even though I'm always a bit critical towards pork, it was super delicous. I love Korean food way too much. After that we went to the district of Gamcheon culture village. It is an old cultural village on the hills of Pusan with lots of coloured houses and a great view to the bay. After that we visited Jagalchi fish market quickly and enjoyed the famous Hoddoek nearby. It's a kind of pancake fried in Margarine and filled with seeds. We've had them in Seoul before, but the Pusan version was a lot better.

On Monday night we treated ourselves for a visit at Shinsaegae Spa Land. The entrance fee was only about CHF 15.- and we could stay there for 4 hours. The visit included the famous Jimjilbang - Korean Spa part. This is where men and women. separately of course, enjoy baths and body scrubs, all naked. I have heard the rumour earlier that Koreans don't shave or trim at all. A man might even be considered gay without any hair in that certain area. I never gave it too much thought though until my visit in that Jimjilbang. From teenage girl to grandmother, natural is a big trend here! This was my culture shock in Pusan but definitely worth it.

Tuesday
Tuesday, our last and by far the most sunny day in Pusan, was all about enjoying the sun and the beach. We were walking around famous Haeundae beach, The Bay and my favourite part of the city "Dalmaji". Dalmaji felt incredibly quiet and stylish. It was full of fancy restaurants and cafés with a great view over the sea. I've never been to Beverly Hills in the US but that's how imagine it to be. We landed up in a place called "Bake House" that Della suggested. We enjoyed European style croissants, fresh juice, coffee and an amazing view over the sea.

After these amazing four days in Pusan I love South Korea even more, we could have stayed there a lot longer with the nice weather coming up.

a perfect friday afternoon at han river

I'm currently in the middle of my mid-term exams, that's why I haven't been so active here lately. I do have quite an easy schedule here in Seoul, however the exams require quite a lot of studying. That's why I haven't been so actively posting lately.

I've been dying to share yet another perfect afternoon in Seoul with you. As you might have read last week was cherry blossom season in Seoul. By now the bad weather has killed the beauty, luckily we went to see the trees last week. That's why we took a ride to Han river on Friday afternoon after an unspectacular day at university. The atmosphere there was vibrant, many young people enjoying the great weather, having chicken & beer.  I can't wait for summer to come and finally enjoy the sun down there.

As it still gets quite cold in the evenings here we decided to go for a grill restaurant in Itaewon to have dinner. The food was a mix of Korean and American BBQ it was soo incredibly delicious I'm still dreaming of it!

The seagulls are for my sisters, missing you both badly <3
